Hi, I’m Domonique. And this is my story.

I started my career like a lot of high-achievers, working my dream job at a big firm on Wall Street.

I was always that woman who had a plan with a clear destination. So when I worked my way into a niche practice area doing exactly what I wanted, surrounded by some of the top minds in law – I really thought that I had made it.

But after a few years, I realized that I was incredibly unfulfilled. It was heartbreaking thinking about all of the hours I'd put into getting there, only to realize that "arriving" wasn’t at all what I had expected.

I had no idea what my next steps were. For the first time ever, the girl who always had a plan realized she had no direction.

I was back at square one. It was a scary place given that I always knew what my next steps were. Thankfully, I didn’t let the fear paralyze me. I reached out to my network and broadened my perspective.

A mentor asked me - What matters to you? What do you actually enjoy? It was the first time I ever stopped to think about these questions in the context of my career. Up until this point, I had spent years blindly operating in go, go, go mode. Facing these questions helped me take a look at what I actually valued and how I could honor those values in every career decision.

And my intuition whispered, “We don’t want to practice law anymore.”

My mind was racing, reminding me of all the time, energy, and money I’d poured into that career and path. But at the same time, my heart was clear–I wanted to support women and people of color in their professional journeys. I wanted them to experience joy, fulfillment, and meaning as they broke through a prescribed path and started writing their own. I felt this so clearly. Heck, I wanted this for myself. But when I thought about becoming a coach, I kept parking the idea. Still, the seed was planted.

A job change that landed me in the NBA

Well, in the legal department of the National Basketball Association as Counsel for their Global Partnerships business.

I had always been interested in sports and entertainment, so this felt like a great step forward. When people found out that I’d started a new role at the NBA—one that aligned with my values of connection, service, and impact—they told me how unfulfilled they were in their jobs and asked for guidance on how to make a change of their own.

When the seed of coaching finally took root

After having made the jump myself, I realized how impactful I could be as a coach who helped others navigate a similar transition out of the dream and into their dream. I got certified as a coach and started to follow my curiosity. I moved toward what energized me and started making decisions that aligned with my values.

I thought back to all of the people who believed in me when I didn’t have a clear destination in mind. They championed and supported me–ultimately helping me find a role that felt far more fulfilling. I knew that I wanted to do the same for others.

So I turned that seed of a coaching idea into action and started to actually coach people alongside my “day job” as a corporate lawyer. Coaching while working at the NBA gave me the opportunity to integrate my work and passion into my career. I was able to show up authentically and expand my impact in the organization to a degree that I never could have without trusting my intuition and following my curiosity.

When the whisper turned into a scream

And then, 2020 happened. Between the pandemic’s disproportionate impact on women and communities of color, combined with the racial awakening taking place in the U.S. –there was suddenly a heightened sense of urgency to my work. What started as an intuitive whisper with the message to give coaching a try turned into a scream telling me that this was my purpose.

I couldn’t ignore this. I was meant to be a coach and I was prepared to dedicate all of my time, energy, and attention to supporting marginalized groups in professional settings.

That’s when I started leading the League’s internal D&I strategy and creating initiatives to support the retention and advancement of women and employees of color.

This new role felt like striking gold…at least at first. It was so aligned that I poured every ounce of my being into it–depleting myself mentally, physically, and emotionally. I found myself burnt out and completely disconnected from the people I cared about most.

It was time to go all in on myself

And soon I realized that would only be possible from the outside.

After depleting myself by juggling two careers, I realized that I needed to put all of my energy into one avenue - the one I was most aligned with.

I took a 3-month sabbatical to recharge and reconnect with the things that spark joy and a sense of groundedness in my life.

And on the other side of those 3 months, I emerged with razor-sharp clarity and a renewed sense of purpose.

Since then, I’ve successfully coached teams and leaders from companies such as MasterClass, Hinge and DoorDash to unlock their potential by aligning with the core of who they are.

I help leaders become exceptionally aligned.

I help them unleash Something Bigger and step into the career and life that lights them up with meaning.

Because when we pursue joy, fulfillment, and aligned success–our impact on the world is unlimited.

See what happens when you step into your power

One of my most significant wins during our three months of work together was opening my eyes to the wisdom that I am allowed to try again to build a career that works for me, no matter how long or how many more tries it may take me. This has been freeing. After our work together, I am better able to recognize and respect my instincts and I am proud to have started making decisions accordingly. Working with Domonique is illuminating, empowering, and a great privilege!
